It was founded in 1326 as a small village on the coast of the Becha River. Initially, the Serbian city was called Great Bechkerek. For centuries Serbs, Germans, Italians, Romanians, later French and Spaniards lived here. In 1722, the first school opened its doors to its students. In 1883, the first railway line was laid through the urban area. At the same time, the station was opened.
