History
Roman inscription found in the Fortress of Sexaginta Prista
In the 1st century. n. e. during the reign of the emperor Vespasian, a Roman fortified settlement and a marina were built here (hereinafter - the fortress and port of Sexaginta Prista). The fortress was located on the main road from Singidunum to the Danube Delta and the Black Sea. In 250, the Goths destroyed it, but at the end of the 3rd century the Romans rebuilt it. In the IV century, it was destroyed again (this time - by the Getae, advancing from the north, by the barbarian Thracian tribes). In the IX-X centuries. the Bulgarians built a fortress on the ruins and named it Ruse. In the XIII-XIV centuries. the city was also called Gyurgovo or Yorgovo in honor of St. George the Victorious.
