Ivory Coast is a country in the west of Africa. In the south, the country is located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean.
For a long time this area was a colony of France. The French called them "Ivory Coast". In German: Ivory Coast. The name of the country comes from the fact that people used to come here to hunt elephants.
Ivory Coast is about the same size as Germany, but it is home to only about 24 million people. The largest city in Ivory Coast is called Abidjan. Approximately one in six residents lives in Abidjan. It was also the capital of Ivory Coast until 1983.
The Republic of Côte d'Ivoire has been independent from France since 1960. In the years after 1990, there were major riots in the country, it was like a civil war. In 2002, Ivory Coast was divided into two parts. Efforts are still being made to restore peace and unity.
