Mongolia is a country in Asia. Their two neighboring countries are Russia in the north and China in the south. The country is about four times the size of Germany. Half of the three million inhabitants live in the capital Ulaanbaatar. Most of the country's inhabitants are Mongols, but even in China, many people speak Mongolian.
In the Middle Ages, the ruler Genghis Khan managed to unite the Mongol tribes. He and his descendants conquered vast territories in Asia, but also in Europe. It is said that the Mongol Empire was the largest in the world.
For a long time Mongolia belonged to China. The North, Outer Mongolia, was liberated from China in 1921. This was achieved with the help of the Soviet Union. Democracy has reigned in Mongolia since 1990.
