Reunion

10,000 kilometers from Paris, between Madagascar and Mauritius, a small part of France protrudes from the Indian Ocean: the tropical volcanic island of La Reunion.

Once a slave colony, now an equal overseas department with a population of 700,000 people. Despite rapid population growth and high unemployment, the island has become France's showcase in the Indian Ocean - thanks to billions of dollars in subsidies from Paris and Brussels.

There is a unique mix of peoples on the island. Creoles, whites and blacks, Indians, Chinese and Madegasses peacefully coexist on Reunion. Even the most diverse religions, Christians, Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists treat each other with respect.

Nature is impressive: mountains 3,000 meters high and a volcano that is still active, tropical forests, bizarre rocky gorges and waterfalls.
