Senegal is a country located on the coast of West Africa. It is located on the Atlantic Ocean and borders five countries: Mauritania, Mali, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and the Gambia. The country is almost five times the size of Switzerland.
The capital of Dakar is located right on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Approximately every 13th inhabitant of the country lives there. At the same time, Dakar is not a city with a majority of inhabitants at all. Because there are even more people living in the city of Pikin than in Dakar. The majority of the inhabitants are Muslims.
The length of the Gambia River is more than 1,100 kilometers, making it the longest river in Senegal. There are few high mountains in Senegal. The highest mountain is Sambaya.
Few areas in Senegal can be used for agriculture because there is little rainfall. However, many people work in agriculture. The main products of cultivation are cotton, which is mainly processed into textiles. Many people are engaged in fishing on the coast.
There are also chemical plants. Minerals in Senegal include gold, phosphate and petroleum. But, first of all, iron ore is mined.
Almost half of the residents cannot read. In 2003, the school system was updated, and all children in the country had to start going to school.
