The French city of Orange (Provence region) was once the possession of the Counts of Orange (comte d`Orange). This title, established in the 8th century by the Frankish king Charlemagne, was transferred to the Dutch crown in the 16th century.
The most famous member of the Orange dynasty is Prince William, who, as a result of the Glorious Revolution, ascended the English throne in 1688 with his wife Mary II Stuart.
