In 1536, the city briefly became the main port of the island, but then 250 years of decline began. The beginning of the industrial revolution again led to the growth of the city, and if in 1801 there were 1942 people, then in 1901 there were already 11,500 people. In the 19th century, Svennborg was connected by rail with Odense, Foborg and Nyborg, industrial enterprises were built here, and the reconstructed harbor turned out to be a very convenient place for the export of goods. The development of the port led to the fact that in 1907 a shipyard was built on the artificial island, which existed until 2001. In 1933, the writer Bertolt Brecht, exiled from Germany, moved here. Subsequently, he titled one of his collections of poems "Svendborger Gedichte" (German: Svendborger Gedichte).
