Sapporo is a fairly young city for Japan, in 1857 its population was only 7 people, and now it has grown to 2 million. Although the city does not have as long a history as Kyoto, for example, it attracts many tourists primarily with its Snow Festival, as well as excellent hot springs and many nearby resorts. Outside of Japan, Sapporo is known as the city that hosted the 1972 Winter Olympics. In addition, Sapporo has hosted three Asian Winter Games in 1986, 1990 and 2017.
