The Algonquins originally lived on the territory of the modern city. The first settlement on the site of the city, the village of Muddy River, appeared in 1638, and the status of a city was awarded to it in 1705. In the early 1830s, a railway was laid through the city. Brookline is one of the centers of American Jewish life. The oldest synagogue in the city has existed since 1842.
Brookline is the hometown of the 35th US President John F. Kennedy and his brother, the 64th Attorney General (Minister of Justice) Robert F. Kennedy.
