The name of the city comes from the phrase "Amstel dam" and shows how the city was born: the dam on the Amstel River was located on the site of the present Dam Square. Having emerged as a small fishing village at the end of the 12th century, during the Golden Age of the Netherlands, Amsterdam became one of the most important port cities in the world. At the time, it was a leading center for finance and diamond trading. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the city expanded significantly, new districts and suburbs were formed.
