Origin Shelton was settled by the British as part of the city of Stratford, Connecticut in 1639. On May 15, 1656, the Connecticut Colony Court at Hartford confirmed that the city of Stratford included the entire area 12 miles (19 km) inland from Long Island Sound, between the Houseatonic River and the Fairfield city line. In 1662, Stratford's elected Lieutenant Joseph Judson, Captain Joseph Hawley, and John Minor secured all written documents of the Paugussetta Indian Nation of the Golden Hill for this vast territory, which includes the present-day towns of Trumbull, Shelton and Monroe.
Shelton split from Stratford in 1789 as Huntington (named after Samuel Huntington). The current name comes from a Manufacturing Village that was founded in the 1860s after the Shelton Company, founded by Edward N. Shelton, also the founder of the Ousatonic Water Power Company. The rapidly growing Shelton area was converted to a city in 1915 and merged with the city of Huntington in 1919 to create the current city of Shelton.
