The population is 29.3 thousand inhabitants (2007). Founded in 1948, city status received in 1971. The city is located on the Vuoksa River, in the northern part of the Karelian Isthmus, near the border with Russia, 210 km from St. Petersburg. The nearest Russian city is Svetogorsk (7 km). The main employers in the city are Stora Enso (pulp and paper production), city municipality, Ovako Bar Oy (metallurgical industry), border guard.
