The population in 2010 was 34,768 people.
The city is named after Francis Marion, hero of the American Revolutionary War. This site was chosen in 1839 as the first administrative center of the newly formed Lynn County. After years of debate over the transfer of the headquarters to Cedar Rapids, a vote was taken in 1919, in which 9,960 people voted in favor of the transfer and 4,823 against.
Every year the city hosts the Swamp Foxes Festival, named after the Swamp Fox, the nickname of Francis Marion during the Revolutionary War.
