In 1832, the Yankees moved from the northern part of New York to the suburbs of the city, who came in search of new opportunities for commercial activity. In 1934, Captain Gilbert Knapp founded Port Gilbert at the mouth of the Root River. Knapp later renamed the settlement, giving it the name of the Root River.
