The area around the large rivers - Sava and Danube - was inhabited as early as the Paleolithic era. In a quarry, not far from the settlement of Leshtane, in the Chukaritsa cave and near the Baylon market, the remains of the bones and skulls of Neanderthals living here in the Stone Age were found.
