Kingsport was an important trading port on the Holston River. At the Battle of Kingsport on December 13, 1864, during the American Civil War, 300 Confederates under Colonel Richard Morgan held off a superior Northern force of 5,500 men on the opposite side of the Holston River for about two days. However, then a significant part of the northerners crossed the river in another place and went to the rear of the enemy. Once surrounded, the Confederates surrendered. 18 Confederates were killed and 84 captured. As a result of the Civil War, Kingsport fell into disrepair for a long time.
