Padova is located on the eastern edge of the Padan Plain, about 10 km north of the Euganean Hills and about 20 km west of the Venetian Lagoon. The urban area is 92 km². It is a plain through which many canals run between the Brenta and Bacchiglione rivers. The canals of the city were the backbone of the economy of medieval Padua, thanks to the presence of a large number of mills, as well as due to the direct accessibility by water to Venice - the journey along the Brenta River took just over three hours. Padua's canal system protects the city from flooding to this day.
