According to the 2001 census, 91.80% of Lana's population considers German as their mother tongue, 7.91% Italian and 0.29% Ladin.
Lana is one of three municipalities in the province of Bolzano, whose name remained unchanged after the fascist renaming program, which aimed to replace mostly German place names with Italianized variants (for the simple reason that Lana was "forgotten"). However, according to another theory, the name "Lana" is originally Italian and therefore does not need to be changed.
