The city of Stockholm is located in the place where Lake Mälaren flows through a labyrinth of small and large islets into the Baltic Sea. The oldest part of the city - Gamla Stan (literally old town) - is located on an island that controlled the waterway between the lake and the sea. The same island is crossed by land routes connecting the north of Sweden with the south. The strategic location of the city led to its development as a military, commercial and industrial center and to the acquisition of a capital status.
