History The Irish name of the city - Nás na Ríogh - literally translates as “Meeting place of kings”. This is due to the fact that even before the arrival of the Vikings, Irish princes gathered here. After the Norman conquest, the city occasionally hosted meetings of the Irish parliament. A significant part of the original population of the city were Cambro-Normans from Wales, so that the main cathedral of the city was dedicated to St. David of Wales.
