History
During the Three Kingdoms, present-day Suwon was home to a settlement known as Mosu, later renamed Mahol. At the time of the unified Silla, Mahol was renamed Suson County, and during the reign of the Goryeo dynasty - in Suju. The modern name was received in 1413, the status of the city (si) was obtained in 1949. King Jeonjo (Korean 정조) made an unsuccessful attempt to move the country's capital to Suwon in 1796. For this, the famous Hwaseong Fortress was built around the city, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fortress exists to this day, being the main attraction of the city.
