The city bears the name of the Apostle Paul, on the day of whose memory it was founded by the Jesuits on the site of an Indian settlement on January 25 (St. Paul's Day) in 1554.
The city has an area of 1,523 km² and a population of 11.3 million (according to IBGE data for 2011), making it the third most populous city in the Western Hemisphere.
