Swindon is a city in the English ceremonial county of Wiltshire in the south-west of England, the administrative center of the Swindon unitary unit. Population - 185 609 (2011).

Industry Swindon became a city after IK Brunel set up a plant for the production of locomotives for the Great Western Railway. Swindon is to this day an important transport hub in England.

For this and a number of other reasons, offices and factories of large international companies are located in the city. Companies with offices (production) of 800 people or more located in Swindon: Honda plant, Alcatel-Lucent, Motorola, BMW (Mini plant), Intel, WHSmith, RWE, Zurich IFA Group, Arval, Tyco Electronics, Catalent.

In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, a significant portion of the railway workshops and depots from the era of the Industrial Revolution were redesigned to house cultural institutions, including the headquarters of the National Trust and the archives of the English Heritage Agency.
