History
The city was founded by Greeks from Istria in the 5th century B.C. as a sea-river crossing point under the name of Prohilia (Προχειλία). This role, i.e. transshipment of goods from sea vessels to river vessels and back, the port of Braila performed until the beginning of the 20th century.
