Tanabe (田 辺 市 Tanabe-shi) is a city in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan.

Population 85 589 people. (2006), the area of the city is 136.42 km². The status of a large city was obtained on May 20, 1942. Tanabe lies on the ocean and is surrounded by mountains. Kumano-kodo trails run through Tanabe, along which pilgrims headed to the Shinto shrines of Kumano from the ocean.

The inhabitants of the city are engaged in fishing, catching mainly sirasu. Citrus fruits are grown. In order to attract tourists, a large Oohama beach is organized.
