Portoferraio is a commune in Italy on the island of Elba, located in the Tuscany region, in the province of Livorno. The main city and port of the Tuscan archipelago.

History The city was founded in 1548 by the Grand Duke of Tuscan Cosimo I Medici with a defensive purpose to prevent attacks on their territories on the mainland. The fortress has survived to this day and is open to tourists. The city has a Napoleon Museum.
