Poprad is a city in northern Slovakia, located at the foot of the High Tatras on the Poprad River. The population is about 55 thousand people. Not far from Poprad is the important Slovak airport Poprad-Tatry, which is the highest in Europe.

History On the territory of the village of Matejovce, which is now part of the city of Poprad, the bones of a 25-30 year old man who died of hepatitis B were found in a tomb at the end of the 4th century. The modern city arose from the union of five Spish settlements: Poprad Veельka Kvetnitsa Matejovce Guard under the Tatras Spisska Sobota Poprad itself was first mentioned in 1256, the population was mostly German. In 1312-1772 Poprad, along with other Spiš towns, was given as a deposit for the royal debt to Poland. In 1871 a railway was built here. In 1927 the population of Poprad exceeded the population of Spišská Sobota and the regional center was moved here.
