Industry Swindon became a city after IK Brunel set up a plant for the production of locomotives for the Great Western Railway. Swindon is to this day an important transport hub in England.

For this and a number of other reasons, offices and factories of large international companies are located in the city. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, a significant portion of the railway workshops and depots from the era of the Industrial Revolution were redesigned to house cultural institutions, including the headquarters of the National Trust and the archives of the English Heritage Agency.
