Goppingen is a city in southern Germany, part of the Stuttgart administrative region of the federal state of Baden-Württemberg. The capital of the Goppingen district. Located at the foot of the Hohenstaufen mountain, in the valley of the Vilz river.

History The city is believed to have been founded by the Alemannic leader Geppo around the third or fourth century. A violent fire on 25 August 1782 destroyed most of the city, but it was quickly rebuilt. Industrialization in the 19th century turned these lands into the center of industry. The city has its own sports club, FrischAuf Goppingen, which plays in the first division of the German handball championship. The city is home to Europe's largest toy railroad company, Märklin.
