Budapest is the capital of Hungary, formed in 1873 as a result of the merger of three cities on the banks of the Danube: Pest, Buda and Obuda. The largest city in the country and the ninth largest in the European Union (about 1.75 million inhabitants in 2019), the center of an agglomeration with a population of about 2.97 million people (2017).

The first settlement on the territory of Budapest called Ak-Ink was founded by the Celts in the 1st century BC. e. Under the Romans, Aquincus became the center of the province of Lower Pannonia. In the Middle Ages, King Bela IV of Hungary made the city of Buda his capital. In 1867, Pest became the capital of Transleitania, one of the parts that make up the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. The historic center of Budapest is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
