Seoul is one of the most beautiful cities in East Asia, founded in 1934 during the Joseon Dynasty. It received its present name and status of the capital after South Korea gained independence in 1948. The city was badly damaged during the Korean War (1950 - 1953), but was subsequently rebuilt very quickly.
