Gyeongju was the capital of the ancient Korean state of Silla and one of the most prosperous cities in East Asia. The power of Silla, which emerged at the beginning of the 1st millennium AD. e., spread over most of the Korean Peninsula from the 7th to the 9th century. Since then, many historical and cultural monuments have remained in the city. After the fall of the Silla dynasty, the city gradually lost its significance.
Modern Gyeongju is a typical medium-sized South Korean city. However, a large number of attractions, including those included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, make Gyeongju, along with Seoul, the center of tourism in South Korea.
