The first mention of the city on the site of present-day Seoul dates back to the 4th century. Since 370 BC e. the city, then called Vireson, was the capital of the state of Baekje. Later, the name was changed to Hanson, and then (from the XIV century) the city was renamed Hanyang. At the same time, the city was surrounded by a powerful fortress wall, into the structure of which the rocky areas of the surrounding mountains were successfully fitted.
