In the Middle Ages, it was the third largest in the state and was a center of trade, mainly for the export of iron, which was handled by traders from Germany. The city was formed around the Kalmar Castle, which, in turn, was built in the XII century around a watchtower designed to protect against pirates and Danes.
Other attractions include the Kalmar Cathedral, designed by Nicodemus Tessin the Elder.
