Valentine Hicks, abolitionist son-in-law and Quaker preacher Elias Hicks, and eventual president of the Long Island Railroad, bought land in the village in 1834 and turned it into a stop at LIRR in 1837.The station became a depot to produce, especially cucumbers for the Company. Heinz factory. After the collapse of the crop destroyed cucumber crops, farmers began to grow potatoes. It turned into a bustling New York suburb during the construction boom that followed World War II.
